EMPLOYERS and training providers working to achieve the highest safety standards in the oil and gas industry are being invited to submit their nominations for the seventh annual OPITO Safety and Competency Awards 2016.

The accolades will be presented at the OPITO Safety and Competence Conference (OSCC) held at The Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on November 16th.

These awards recognise companies that are committed to building a safe and competent workforce through OPITO standards.

The event will bring together more than 450 industry, government and training provider executives to challenge current thinking on the regulation, maintenance and delivery of safety training and competence standards to ensure the global industry is ‘Fit for the Future’.

OSCC is the only global event focused on safety and competency in the oil and gas industry. The event was introduced to bring operators, contractors and the supply chain together with training organisations and regulators to provide a forum for sharing new thinking and best practice.

Any oil and gas company can enter the OSCC Employers Award if it can demonstrate how it is building a safe and competent workforce. Companies will be judged on how they have effectively adopted OPITO standards and how they are future proofing skills and a safe working environment through training competence and qualification initiatives. They will also be asked to demonstrate how they are adapting for the future with the use of innovation in technology and processes.

The Approved Training Providers Award recognises the training provider which has demonstrated its commitment to developing the skills of its staff to deliver OPITO training. The criteria examines the range of standards used in development programmes, their structure and timeframe; and ask for examples of innovation in learning and development. Entrants will also be asked to demonstrate creative and innovative approaches in the changing industry operating environment and how this ensures the workforce is ‘Fit for the Future’.

OPITO group chief executive officer David Doig said: “The oil and gas industry is facing challenges like never before and smart businesses recognise there is significant opportunity for reinvention when it comes to the skills, safety and competency of the global workforce.

“Despite the downturn, there have been some outstanding initiatives spearheaded by companies around the world which truly underline the passion the industry has for its people. It’s crucial that we continue to champion the ongoing efforts of the organisations which are making a concerted effort to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the workforce. Year on year we see companies reaching the highest standards in safety and the OSCC Awards are our way of recognising and rewarding their ongoing efforts.”

Entries can be made online at www.opito.com/oscc-conference by Friday, August 19th. An independent judging panel of industry leaders will score each entry according to the agreed criteria. Finalists will be announced by Friday, September 16th and winners announced at OSCC 2016.

Speakers confirmed for this years’ conference include business innovator and “master thief” Hamish Taylor; renowned psychologist Ross Gilmour; Gordon Ballard, executive director of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP); John Christian, Asia Pacific corporate HSE lead for Technip Malaysia; Simon Durkin, managing director for Sarawak Shell Berhad and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Limited; and Robert Morgan, chairman of global digital learning technologies leader Atlas Knowledge Group.

Delegates attending OSCC, which is moving to a new location in Kuala Lumpur for the first time this year, will hear how technology can create real efficiencies in training and assessment processes; and look at how the industry can bring innovation to the way it trains people to go to work and get home safely.
