Shape Digital has launched Shape Lumen, an AI-based system designed to identify the causes of unplanned flaring and support emissions reduction in oil and gas production. The company says MODEC has expanded the technology to ten FPSOs in Brazil following a successful pilot.

Announced on 16 September, Lumen examines operational signals across gas, oil and water systems. It monitors flow limits and analyses sensor information preceding an event, helping engineers identify the process conditions associated with unwanted flaring. The system classifies root causes hourly and provides information that teams can use to plan corrective action.

Shape Digital reports that one application reduced average daily unplanned flaring emissions by more than 12%. The company estimated annual savings of US$200,000 for an FPSO producing 200,000 barrels per day in that case, based on gas and carbon prices. These figures describe a specific application and should not be treated as guaranteed results across other assets.

Lumen also includes a predictive model that projects monthly cumulative flaring trends. Shape Digital says implementation can take approximately one month per offshore unit once the required instrumentation is available. The MODEC rollout moves the technology beyond a single pilot into wider offshore use.
