The RDF Export Industry Group released findings which highlighted that there would be virtually no environmental benefit to domestically processing the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) currently being exported from the UK. A sharp increase in the amount of UK waste being exported to mainland Europe led to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) issuing a call for evidence that only ‘truly residual waste’ was being exported. However, according to the report released last week, if the 2.6 million tonnes of RDF that was exported in 2014 was treated domestically, it would contribute around 0.5 per cent to total UK electricity generation and around 0.8 per cent to total UK renewable electricity generation.*

This year’s Energy from Waste conference will provide the opportunity to hear more on refuse derived fuel in an exclusive industry spotlight when it returns to London in December.

With a focus on European Waste Markets, Paco Hevia, Head of Projects at the Environment Centre of Excellence from Ferrovial Services/Amey, will discuss RDF exporting versus retention as well as provide delegates with an understanding of current export markets.

In addition, CMS Russia and the UK Environmental Agency will address the European trade in presentations that will give regulatory guidance surrounding the EU circular economy and explore the EU's future outlook relating to waste management strategy.
