TotalEnergies and Mistral have announced a three-year programme worth more than €100 million to develop artificial intelligence models for oil and gas exploration and reservoir engineering. Announced on 15 September, the partnership will support TotalEnergies’ geoscientists as they assess subsurface opportunities and plan field development.

The companies intend to combine Mistral’s AI capabilities with TotalEnergies’ accumulated geoscience knowledge and strategic subsurface information. A joint scientific laboratory will bring together specialists from both businesses to develop models tailored to exploration, reservoir characterisation and engineering workflows.

The proposed tools will process and interpret large datasets and generate alternative development scenarios. TotalEnergies also sees applications in improving existing projects and evaluating ways to extend their operating lives. Agentic AI is among the approaches identified for the programme.

The announcement represents a research and development commitment rather than a report of completed field deployment. Its technical focus is on giving experts additional analytical support for complex subsurface decisions. For oil and gas operators, the collaboration highlights the growing role of customised industrial AI and the importance of retaining control over commercially valuable geological information.
